I'm not sure I've ever heard the BBC4 Program, Desert Island Discs (except once, because John Adams was the guest so I made a point of it), but I'm fascinated by the LISTS they keep of their guests' choices. Everybody has preferences, and back in June we tried without much success to get our singers to send us their own favorites as well. Knowing a person's preferences not only gives you a window into their thinking but also gives me ideas for more music to explore. One of my ideas for the chorus going in was to get a compendium of people's top ten musical pieces: singers, friends, audience members, random strangers. If for no better reason than to just give them the sense that their ideas matter. I think it may be time to revive that idea.
