"Focus Test: The Movie. Starring Non-Threatening White Guy"
HYSTERICAL and genuinely fantastic TV. h/t die Domask.
I wonder if I'm the only person in the world who thinks that in a parallel universe Stephen Colbert and Steve Carell have each other's careers. They're both nasal-voiced brilliant improvisers who've made amazing careers out of playing idiots. If they took each other's places the shows would be fundamentally the same. Colbert is obviously more smarmy, Carell more eager to be liked, but these two literally grew up in comedy together: from Second City through the Dana Carvey Show, through Robert Smigel Cartoons (remember the Ambiguously Gay Duo? That was them.), and then finally graduation on The Daily Show. It's as though they're two sides of the same coin, and fortunately Jon Stewart (or whoever his producer was) had the foresight to see this and pair them together.
Also, conspiracy theory of the week. Leno's current ratings are lower than Conan's ever were and his nice-guy image is tarnished forever. Is Carell leaving The Office for The Tonight Show? I wouldn't ever take that to the bank, but his movie career isn't exactly inspiring, so who knows?
